Over the past 25 years, Dr. Heejo Lee has consistently contributed to the advancement of security technologies for academia, private industries, and the national government through education, research, and industrial-academic cooperation projects in the field of cybersecurity.
One of the missions for his showcased project is to train undergraduate and graduate students via project participation and provide an automatic platform called IoTcube, which is available freely at https://iotcube.net . The IoTcube platform is to enable non-security professionals and novice engineers to analyze vulnerabilities in all kinds of IoT devices professionally. Dr. Lee and his team have developed the technology for black-box testing, white-box testing, and network testing to develop an automatic platform to analyze security vulnerabilities in IoT devices. The project was first being launched by the ICT R&D program of MSIP/IITP at 2015, along with the establishment of the Center for Software Security and Assurance ( http://cssa.korea.ac.kr ). The team has also coordinated with a global research team with Korea University, Carnegie Mellon University, Oxford University, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) in order to build a global IoT security community and put scattered security technologies into one location to be shared by anyone in the world. Dr. Lee believes that the project has been a great experience that faculty members can work together with young students, and share the results with everyone in the world through the IoTcube platform.
Dr. Lee has taught undergraduate computer science major courses on computer security since 2004. Open to both computer science majors and non-computer science majors, his courses have been attended by roughly 70 students each year. His classes are regarded as “must take before you graduate” courses among seniors.
In terms of international community outreach, he has provided cybersecurity consultation services to countries outside of Korea. As one of Korea ICT’s cooperation projects in Korea Information Society Development Institute, consultation on cybersecurity in developing countries has been conducted from 2006. The security experts from various fields including government, academia, and industry forms a consulting team and provide consultation for one country in a year with tight cooperation. Dr. Lee has served as a lead consultant for six countries: the Philippines, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Myanmar, Costa Rica, and Cambodia. The consulting team shares the experiences from Korea and suggests policy recommendations for the country, after examining the current status of ICT environments and security threats of the country.
